Forecast: 4 to 7 cyclones in central Pacific

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Weather forecasters in Hawaii say the large swath of the Pacific that includes the islands could see four to seven tropical cyclones during the upcoming hurricane season.

Acting Director Tom Evans of the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said Wednesday that the region encompassing about one-fourth of the Pacific Ocean north of the equator has a high likelihood of a normal or wetter than normal hurricane season.

Evans says the outlook is partly because of a 65 percent chance that unusually warm sea surface temperatures develop in the Pacific near the equator this summer. The phenomenon known as El Nino generally leads to more active hurricane seasons.

Evans says it's unclear whether any of the cyclones would actually hit Hawaii. Hawaii has been directly hit by hurricanes three times since 1950.
