Hawaii to host major global conservation meeting

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Hawaii will host a major conservation event in 2016 that will draw leaders from 1,200 organizations around the globe.

The World Conservation Congress brings attendees from UN agencies, businesses and organizations that are part of The International Union for Conservation of Nature.

President Barack Obama says the warmth and hospitality of the people of Hawaii will make a lasting impression on the delegates.

U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, who pushed for the meeting to be held in Hawaii, says the meeting will benefit the local economy.

The event is held every four years and will be hosted at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu.

In 2012, delegates met in South Korea.

This will be the first time that the United States hosts the gathering.
