Report says historic island sites threatened

By 67AM KPUA News

Two historic sites on Hawai`i Island are included in a report issued today by the Union of Concerned Scientists that identifies 30 locations threatened by rising seas, flooding and worsening wildfires. The report says Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical and Koloko-Honokohau National Historical parks are at risk due to sea level rise and increased likelihood of storm
surges.

UCS Director of Climate Impacts and report co-author Adam Markham, says the imminent risks to these sites and the artifacts they contain threaten to pull apart the quilt that tells the story of our nations heritage and history. The report says carbon emissions must be reduced to slow the rate of change and give archaeologists, historic preservationists and land managers more time to protect the sites.
