Dive assault caught on film

By 67AM KPUA News

The State Department of Land and Natural Resources is investigating an underwater altercation that occurred last week off Kailua-Kona.

Maui resident Rene Umberger said she was diving at Keawaiki Bay last Thursday, when she was attacked by one of two aquarium fish collectors she was filming as they were capturing coral species. Umberger said the man swam up to her about 30 to 40 feet away and ripped the regulator out of her mouth, while she was about 50 feet below the surface.

The 53-year old Umberger was eventually able to get her regulator back in and breathe again. That's when she captured the suspect make another threatening gesture with his arms toward her. Umberger believes she knows who the suspect is and wants to press charges.
