GMO labeling advocate opens Honolulu office

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) A national organization promoting the labeling of genetically modified foods has opened an office in Honolulu.

Hawaii News Now reports the Center for Food Safety has also established a local political action committee and will get involved in state elections this summer.

The Center for Food Safety helped draft a new law in Vermont requiring labeling.

Honolulu program director Ashely Lukens says many in Hawaii have questioned how labeling would be implemented at a state level. She says Vermont is going to start answering some of those questions.

Hawaii lawmakers have failed to pass labeling legislation. Opponents say labeling would be hard to enforce and cost more for consumers. They say it isn't necessary because there's no scientific evidence genetically modified foods are more harmful than non-GMO foods.
