Music legend Kamakahi dead at 61

By 67AM KPUA News

Hawai`i today is mourning the loss of one of the most prolific writers in Hawaiian music. Grammy winner and hall-of-famer Reverend Dennis Kamakahi, who is credited with composing 500 songs, passed away Monday afternoon at Queens Medical Center, surrounded by family and close friends. The 61-year old Kamakahis passing came less than two months after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Kamakahis career took off in the early 1970s as a member of the legendary Sons of Hawai`i. He would win three Grammys and multiple Na Hoku Hanohano awards and collaborated with his son David to produce songs for the hit Disney movie Lilo and Stitch. In 2009 he won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hawai`i Academy of Recording Arts and was also inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame.

Memorial services are pending.
