Hawaii lawmakers still at odds on minimum wage

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Hawaii lawmakers met Thursday about increasing the minimum wage and the House came up with a new proposal.

But Democratic Senator Clayton Hee calls the new proposal a step backward.

The Senate had wanted to increase the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour in three years, but the House proposed raising it to $10 an hour over four years.

Hee says that 10 cents can make a difference for a single mom. It adds up to the price of a gallon of milk if she works eight hours a day for two weeks.

Business groups say the proposal would harm the economy and slow job creation.

Details of the new House proposal were not immediately available Thursday morning.

Senate members plan to counter when the committee meets again on Monday.
