Cardiac arrest killed man in police custody

By 67AM KPUA News

Police say final autopsy results reveal that a 39-year old Kona man who died in custody in February died from cardio-respiratory arrest due to the combined effects of high levels of methamphetamine in his blood, an enlarged heart and a physical struggle.

Randall Hatori of Kailua was a passenger in a car driven by 38 year old Ernest Ricky Alvarez that was pulled over for a traffic stop at a gas station in a shopping center on Palani Road around 12:30 a.m. February 4th. Hatori, who was wanted for assault and violating a temporary restraining order, got into a struggle with an officer while trying to flee and became unresponsive after being taken into custody.

Fire personnel were summoned to the scene and took him to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 2:00 a.m. The officer also suffered injuries which required treatment. Alvarez was taken to the Kona police cellblock. In addition to the contempt charge, he was arrested on suspicion of promoting a dangerous drug after detectives recovered 7.3 grams of methamphetamine at the scene.
