Honolulu federal inmates wage hunger strike

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Some inmates accused of being in a prison gang have waged a hunger strike to protest conditions at Honolulu's Federal Detention Center.

Attorneys for the inmates say a group of about eight of them stopped eating on Sunday because they believe they're unfairly housed in a segregated unit and are subjected to conditions including a lack of clean underwear, loss of visitations and maggots in food.

Facility spokesman Jeffrey Greene says allegations of insects in food and withholding clean clothes are unfounded.

Attorney Neal Kugiya says his client Moses Thompson is leading the protest. Thompson was in a mainland prison serving a life sentence for murder in a 2002 Waikele shooting. He returned to Honolulu when he and 17 others were indicted for alleged membership in the "USO Family" gang.
