Hawaii lawmakers advance minimum wage hike

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) A key committee in the Hawaii House of Representatives has advanced a bill that would increase the minimum wage to about $10 an hour.

Lawmakers in the House Finance committee considered heard a crush of testimony on the bill Wednesday.

The minimum wage in Hawaii is now $7.25 an hour. Under the proposal, that would rise to gradually every year until it reaches about $10 per hour in 2018.

Advocates for workers say people shouldn't have to wait until 2018 to earn enough wages to support themselves and their families.

But some opponents say employers have too many burdens in a fragile economy.

The Senate passed the bill earlier last month. Its next stop is the House floor.
