Big Island sees small tsunami waves

By 67AM KPUA News

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says a slight rise in sea levels occurred on the Big Island this morning as Hawai`i began to see the effects of a tsunami generated by Tuesdays magnitude 8.2 earthquake in Chile.

Tidal gauges recorded sea level rises on the Big Island ranging from 1.8 feet in Hilo to .1 foot in Honuapo over time spans
of 12 to 16 minutes. Big Island Civil Defense said observers saw 1 to 2 foot fluctuations in Hilo Harbor and Keaukaha as the tsunami waves arrived. No damage has been reported.

Scientists said the wave energy generated by the earthquake would take several hours to move through the islands.
