Hawaii tourism down 4.3 percent in February

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Hawaii tourism officials say travelers from the domestic United States are declining as the islands saw fewer visitors in February than in the same month last year.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority said Thursday that Hawaii welcomed 647,000 visitors in February, 4.3 percent less than in February 2013.

Spending for the month was relatively flat at $1.2 billion, declining less than 1 percent. The authority that markets Hawaii to tourists worldwide says the drop in visitors was partly offset by higher daily spending of $203 per person, up 2.6 percent.

Hawaii Tourism Authority CEO Mike McCartney says declining arrivals from the eastern and western U.S. is a trend likely to continue in the second quarter of the year.

He says the authority has been focused on international markets.
