Bill for public campaign financing in Hawaii dies

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) A bill that would have changed campaign finance laws for state elections in Hawaii has died in the state Senate.

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday deferred the bill indefinitely, halting its progress unless the group decides to hear the bill again this session.

Committee Chairman Clayton Hee says the measure has a lot of loose ends despite being a step in the right direction.

The bill would have provided public funding for campaigns for elections to the state House of Representatives. It also would have changed spending limits and the maximum amount of contributions made to candidates for other offices.

Legislative Chairwoman Janet Mason of the League of Women Voters says the group is disappointed with the outcome. She says elections are too influenced by deep-pocketed political action committees.
