Work battling Hawaii invasive species recognized

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Gov. Neil Abercrombie and other Hawaii officials are recognizing people for their dedication to protecting Hawaii from invasive pests.

Perry Barker of Oahu is being honored with the 2013 Community Hero award for getting rid of invasive plants at West Oahu's Honouliuli Preserve and planting native plants in the area.

Maui's Masako Cordray is being given the Greatest Hit of 2013 award for her work with little fire ants. The farmer and filmmaker detected little fire ants on plant material she bought, leading to the discovery of little fire ants at garden shops and nurseries on Maui and Oahu. The finding triggered a statewide response to the problem.

Officials presented the awards on Monday at the start of Hawaii Invasive Species Awareness Week.
