Plane crash on Hawaii's Lanai Island leaves 3 dead

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) A pilot and two employees of the Maui Department of Planning died in the crash of a small plane after takeoff from Lanai.

Three other county employees were injured in the Wednesday night crash. Maui County says two other planning commission employees were in critical condition and a deputy attorney for Corporation Council was in serious condition. Their names have not been released.

In a news release, the county said all three suffered burns and the deputy attorney pulled two people from the burning wreckage. He also called 911 to report the crash.

At a news conference Thursday, Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa choked back tears, describing how county employees are like "family."

The group had been on Lanai earlier that evening to staff a Lanai Planning Commission meeting and chartered a return flight on Maui Air.
