Expert predicts reduction in shark attacks

By Ken Hupp - 67AM KPUA News

Dont look now, but its been two months since the last shark attack in Hawai`i waters, after a two-year period that saw an average of one attack per month.

University of Hawai`i Marine Biologist Kim Holland not only thinks its safe to go back in the water, but is predicting that the number of attacks will return to previous levels of three to four
per year, because his research found no apparent reason for the spike in the first place.

Shark attacks surged in 2012 with 10 incidents, before spiking to last years total of 14 attacks, including two fatalities. The last shark attack occurred on December 11, when a 29-year-old Captain Cook body boarder was left with cuts to the knee and hand
after being bitten by a 10- to 12-foot tiger shark off Naalehu.
