Hawaii lawmakers push for elder care and education

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Community health programs and education for Hawaii's seniors will get more than $7 million if state lawmakers pass a bill they considered yesterday afternoon.

The bill would fund the state's kupuna, or elder, care program next year and a resource center for aging. It would also start an education campaign to encourage people to plan for long-term care and its costs.

Hawaii lawmakers this year have proposed a package of bills aimed at coping with the state's aging population. The bill says by 2035 nearly a third of the people living in Hawaii will be at least 60 years old.
