Hawaii lawmakers urge changes after molasses spill

By 67AM KPUA News

HONOLULU (AP) Hawaii lawmakers are responding to a Honolulu molasses spill last year by suggesting any fines or settlements the state collects for ocean spills be put toward restoring coral reefs.

Rep. Chris Lee said the special fund is one of several steps the state can take to prevent or respond more efficiently to future spills.

Lee and other lawmakers say the state may take more steps depending on the results of an investigation by the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

EPA spokesman Dean Higuchi in Honolulu says its investigation is pending and the agency doesn't have a timetable for when it will be completed.

Spokesman Jeff Hull of Matson, Inc., the carrier responsible for the spill, says it is cooperating with the investigation but doesn't know when it will be finished.
