Man sentenced in airline hijacking hoax

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) A Big Island man must spend a year and a half in federal prison for making a hoax call that someone he was mad at was going to hijack an airplane.

Timothy David Hershman says he was drunk and angry when he called the FBI last year saying another man was going to hijack an Alaska Airlines flight from Kona to Seattle. The call resulted in two Oregon National Guard fighter jets escorting the flight to Seattle.

Authorities decided the call was a hoax after questioning the other man for nearly two hours. His defense attorney says Hershman made the hoax call to get back at a roommate he was feuding with.

Federal Judge Michael Seabright on Thursday also denied a prosecutors' request that Hershman reimburse the government about $72,000 for fuel and other expenses.
