High winds, surf pummel Hawaiian islands

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) High winds have pummeled the Hawaiian islands, downing power lines, blowing off roofs and causing a tree limb to fall and kill a golfer visiting from Japan.

High surf also has been reported, with Oahu seeing its largest swell in a decade Wednesday.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports a 55-year-old golfer was hit in the head by a tree limb Wednesday at Leilehua Golf Course, an Army facility at Wahiawa. The course is closed until further notice, and the incident is being investigated.

Winds across the islands Tuesday and Wednesday triggered electrical outages and forced road closures.

On Oahu, water flooded the parking lot of Haleiwa Boat Harbor during Wednesday morning's high tide.

The surf should slowly subside Thursday but remain above warning levels.

A groundwater advisory has been issued for the Kihei area and Honokahua Bay on Maui.
