Couple killed in murder/suicide

By 67AM KPUA News

Police say a 25-year old woman whose body was found in waters off Kalapana last May was strangled to death by her boyfriend, who later took his own life. Brittany-Jane Royal had recently moved from Tustin, California and was living in Kalapana with 22-year old Boaz David Johnson, who had recently moved from Petersburg, Alaska, who went missing the day before Royals body was caught in fishing line the morning of May 28th.

A Grand Jury returned a sealed indictment against Johnson for second-degree murder on December 18th, which was unsealed after a body was found hanging from a tree in Kalapana January 2nd and later identified as Johnson.

A composition book was found near the body and contained a handwritten message in which Johnson confessed to strangling Royal during a domestic dispute, throwing her body into the ocean and indicating he intended to end his life. An autopsy ruled out
foul play and ruled Johnsons death a suicide caused by asphyxia due to hanging.
