State investigates dentist after patient's death

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) The state has begun an investigation of a Kailua dentist whose 3-year-old patient died after falling into a coma while she was in the dentist's chair.

Finley Puleo Boyle died Friday at Hospice Hawaii's Kailua house.

The girl's mother, Ashley Boyle, says her daughter never woke up after losing consciousness and suffering massive brain damage following heavy sedation Dec. 3 at Island Dentistry for Children, the office of dentist Lilly Geyer.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Ashley Boyle and her husband, Evan Boyle, have filed a negligence lawsuit and their attorney now plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit.

Geyer's practice has shut down. Geyer's attorney, John Nishimoto, says it would be inappropriate to comment because of a pending lawsuit.

The Hawaii Department Of Commerce and Consumer Affairs is investigating.
