Hawaii father to be sentenced for passport fraud

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) A Hawaii man is facing up to 10 years in federal prison for trying to get his 2-year-old daughter a passport without her mother finding out.

Court documents say Gregory Armin Scher planned a trip to Mexico in spite of an informal joint custody arrangement with the mother living in Missouri.

Authorities say Scher sought help from a congresswoman when his daughter's passport application was rejected because it didn't have required signatures from both parents.

Court documents say Scher claimed he couldn't find the girl's mother.

A State Department special agent investigated and found Scher and the mother communicated often. The agent says the mother didn't know Scher was planning to take the girl to Mexico.

Scher pleaded guilty to passport fraud and is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday.
