In quest for Obama library, Hawaii plays underdog

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) President Barack Obama was born and grew up on Hawaii's shores, soaking in an island sensibility that his family says is part of who he is. Yet in the search for a home for Obama's future presidential library, Hawaii has become the underdog, stuck in Chicago's shadow.

Chicago is where Obama was first elected and matured as a political figure, and many of his advisers and closest supporters call Chicago home.

Hawaii officials say they understand the library will likely go to Chicago. They're hoping if that's the case, Obama will choose to build a presidential center or institute in Hawaii instead.

A high-level campaign has been under way for years in Hawaii, where officials have gently pressed Obama's sister and friends. They've also set aside prime oceanfront property.
