Veterans cemeteries will enforce decoration limits

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) The manager of the veterans cemetery at Pearl Harbor says staff members are enforcing rules that limit the decoration of graves to cut flowers and wreaths.

Willie Hirokane tells KHON-TV that but the cemetery sent out a notice in September that it will start enforcing the rules.

All decorations have to be less than 2 feet tall.

He says workers will remove Christmas trees and other holiday decorations that violate the rules.

The enforcement is disappointing to Gary Carvalho, who for years has used a Christmas tree to decorate the grave of his father, Lance Cpl. Marco Carvalho, Jr.

He says his father served in the Marine Corps civil service at Pearl Harbor and loved Christmas.

Hirokane says the rules will be enforced at all veterans cemeteries including Punchbowl.
