Salvation Army: Hawaii donations down 30 percent

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) The Salvation Army is worried because donations to its annual red kettle campaign in Hawaii are down by 30 percent so far.

Charities say this year's holiday season of giving is shaping up to less generous.

The Salvation Army raised nearly $1 million last year. As of Monday, the red kettle bell campaign raised only about $371,000 statewide.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports charities say possible reasons for the decline include fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas and donations spread thin from the Typhoon Haiyan relief effort.

Salvation Army Divisional Commander Maj. John Chamness says the slow collections may impact the ability to help Hawaii's needy.

Local branches of Toys for Tots and the American Red Cross are also seeing fewer donations this season.
