Hawaii schools charity effort violates ethics code

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) The state Ethics Commission says it's against the rules for Hawaii school teachers to participate in a private holiday charity campaign.

The commission found out that public school teachers and administrators were participating in a Macy's campaign that raises money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Hawaii News Now reports that an advisory issued Thursday says the state ethics code prohibits state employees from using work time and state resources for non-state related business. The commission says that includes supporting private charities.

State Department of Education spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz says the superintendent will be meeting with ethics commission officials to discuss the advisory. Dela Cruz says students are encouraged to be good citizens and that includes helping others in need.
