Man deemed competent to face murder charge

By Associated Press

HILO, Hawaii (AP) A 44-year-old Big Island man has been deemed competent to stand trial on murder, terroristic threatening and weapons charges.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports Hilo Circuit Judge Glenn Hara ordered a Jan. 27 trial for Seon Keoni Aki.

He is charged in the May 20 shooting death of a neighbor, Mateo D. Balinbin Jr., at Balinbin's home in Nanawale Estates.

Three mental health professionals including a state psychologist determined that Aki and was capable of understanding charges against him and assisting in his defense.

Prosecutors say Aki fired a gunshot that struck Balinbin in the head and brandished a pistol as he chased another neighbor out of Balinbin's home.

Aki is a felon banned from possessing guns.

He remains jailed at Hawaii Community Correctional Center with bail set at $360,000.
