HONOLULU (AP) _ A new poll out today shows incumbent Democrat Ed Case with a sizable lead over Republican challenger Mike Gabbard in the race for Hawaii's Second Congressional District.
Poll numbers show Case with 67 percent of support from likely voters, compared to just 18 percent for Gabbard and 15 percent undecided.
Although the two men are considered their parties' leading candidates for the general election, both face opposition in the September 18th primary.
Case faces Hilo businessman John Gentile while Gabbard goes up against three challengers: Oahu physician and radio talk show host Inam Rahman, Maui chiropractor Jonathan Treat and Honolulu city lifeguard Miles Shiratori.
The telephone poll of 449 registered voters who said they were likely to vote in this year's primary was conducted July 27th through August third.
It was conducted by S-M-S Research of Honolulu for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and television station K-I-T-V. The poll has a margin of error of four-point-62 percent.
