School suspends cheerleading after bullying report

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) An Oahu high school has suspended varsity and junior varsity cheerleading while it investigates reports of cyberbullying by team members.

Administrators at McKinley High School in Honolulu tell KHON-TV that they learned members of the 48-person squad had taken part in online bullying.

Complex Area Superintendent Ruth Silberstein says the district puts safety and health first and cheerleading activities will be suspended indefinitely until the investigation ends.

Cheerleaders are being given training sessions about dangers of cyberbullying.

Parents say the school is overreacting. Parent Darren Newton says the administration is punishing all 48 members and not allowing practices, fundraising or wearing uniforms in school.

He says administrators have not determined or have not announced who was involved in bullying and made a kneejerk reaction by suspending the entire team.
