Big Island residents push for beach access trail

By Associated Press

HILO, Hawaii (AP) Residents on the Big Island are pushing for 24-hour access to a popular beach that can only be reached by crossing a private property.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports that about 100 people met with county officials on Tuesday night to press for easier access to Papaikou Mill Beach, along the Big Island's eastern shore.

The beach is next to a former sugar mill property that was purchased by two part-time residents. The new owners cut a switchback trail to the beach and built a fence with a gate, posting limited access hours and a list of rules for those who use the trail.

The county has appraised the path at $28,500, and some residents hope the county can use eminent domain rules if necessary to acquire the trail.
