DOT proposes rate increase for vehicle inspections

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) The Hawaii Department of Transportation is proposing a fee increase for vehicle inspection.

The department is proposing an inspection fee of $19.19 for cars and trucks, an increase of $4.50.

DOT spokeswoman Caroline Sluyter tells the Honolulu Star-Advertiser it's the first time since the 1980s that Hawaii has raised what inspectors can charge.

Inspectors would be provided with tablets to record inspection results and relay them to a server accessible by state officials.

State officials say the new electronic filing system will ensure that inspection information arrives in a timely manner to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The proposed rule changes would require vehicle inspection sites to have high-speed Internet.

State officials hope to make the changes by Nov. 1 following a public comment period.
