Commissaries, clinics hit by budget cutbacks

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) The effects of Defense Department cutbacks are starting to be felt in Hawaii.

KHON-TV reports a hospital, clinics, commissaries and a beach are affected by furloughs that began Monday because of budget cuts known as sequestration.

Congress approved $1.2 trillion in government cuts through 2021 unless alternatives were approved by March 1 and members could not agree on alternatives.

Shoppers Monday who showed up at the Pearl Harbor Commissary were turned away. Commissaries at Schofield, Hickam, and Kaneohe also are closed Mondays

The furloughs will affect 650,000 civilian defense workers.

That includes 14,000 commissary workers who are losing 20 percent of their pay.

Tripler Army Medical Center is reducing appointments and staff and Hickam Beach's lifeguard hours have been reduced.
