Victorious Boys Volleyball team returns to Hilo tonight

The Southside Boy's 14's Volleyball team winners of the United States Association of Volleyball (USAV) 2013 Boys Junior Nationals 14 year-old club division will be returning to the Big Island on July 5th at 7:49 pm aboard United Airlines Flight 1004 from Los Angeles.

Also returning will be the Southside 16's boys team which placed 7th in the 16 year-old division out of a total of 68 teams despite being initially ranked at 58th prior to the onset of the tournament.

There is a small ceremony planned for their return along with a member from the Legislature and a Governor's representative. The public is encouraged to show their support at the airport.

On July 1, 2013, the Southside Boy's 14's Volleyball team consisting of 11 players from the Big Island of Hawai`i, won the United States Association of Volleyball (USAV) 2013 National Championship for the Boys 14 year-old Club Division.

The championships also known as the Boys Junior Nationals are being held in Reno Nevada and began on June 27th in various age groups and are scheduled to conclude on July 4th.

The Southside team was the only team to go undefeated in this division and finished with a perfect 12-0 record. Although they were undersized compared to a majority of their opponents, the Hawaiian team managed to impress many with their ball-handling skills and made numerous saves off of hard hit spikes by their opponents.

The championship match featured Southside defeating a team
from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in straight sets in the best 2 out of 3 sets match by scores of 25-17 and 25-18. Earlier in the day, Southside was able to defeata team known as RockStars of California in the semi-finals also in straight sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-23.

The team is coached by Guy Enriques and Sam Thomas and consists of players: Addison Enriques, Avery Enriques, Na`ia Makuakane, Tristen Cross, Abishai Campbell, Christopher Correa, Kameron Moses, Logan Thomas, Cole "Nakana" Labrie, Daylan-Blake Kalai, and Chase Carter.

The players are 14 years-old with the exception of Campbell, Labrie and Moses who are 13, and Thomas who is 11.
