2 men charged in Big Island calf's shooting

By Associated Press

HONOKAA, Hawaii (AP) Two men have been charged with livestock theft after a calf was found shot and skinned on a Big Island organic farm.

The farm manager says they were just trying to put an injured calf "out of its misery."

A police spokeswoman on Tuesday said Jason Williams and Lonnie Knutson were charged with livestock theft, which is a felony.

Puuala Farm & Ranch manager Zack Gibson tells Hawaii Tribune-Herald the men are volunteers learning about organic farming. He says they should have contacted the calf's owner but they didn't mean to commit a crime.

He says the calf was injured in a gulch and they made a decision to shot it. He says they were trying not to be wasteful by skinning it for meat.
