18 Big Island sirens fail during monthly test

By Associated Press

HILO, Hawaii (AP) Many east Hawaii emergency sirens were silent during a recent monthly test.

County Civil Defense Administrator Darryl Oliveira says the 18 sirens that failed to activate during Monday's test were primarily in Hilo and Puna.

Emergency sirens blare throughout the islands during a test on the first government work day of the month.

Oliveira says the malfunction has been fixed and another test will be scheduled later this month. The public will be warned about the test.

Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports this is the latest problem for the aging tsunami warning system. When a tsunami warning was issued after October's earthquake off Canada, 13 sirens malfunctioned. Some sirens didn't sound until two hours after the warning was issued. Officials say those 13 sirens have been repaired or replaced.
