Hawaii County mayor pushes for waste incinerator

By Associated Press

KAULUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) The mayor of Hawaii County says he wants a facility built to burn solid waste before he leaves office but his newly appointed environment management director says it could take longer.

Bobby Jean Leithead Todd on Wednesday told the county Environmental Management Commission that her office is preparing to hire a consultant that could design a Hilo Landfill extension.

She says the time is needed as a buffer as the county considers a waste-to-energy incinerator.

But Mayor Billy Kenoi tells West Hawaii Today there's no reason an incinerator should take that long and should be finished when he leaves office in three-and-a-half years.

He says Honolulu's HPower garbage incinerator, which provides 7 percent of Oahu's electricity, shows what can be done on the Big Island.
