Army: Hawaii, Alaska to gain 700 positions

By Associated Press

FORT SHAFTER, Hawaii (AP) U.S. Army Pacific says units in Hawaii and Alaska will gain 700 positions under restructuring announced by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno.

But the command says the reorganization of support units in Alaska will also result in a loss of about 900 military police and engineer positions.

The command said in a statement from its headquarters in Hawaii Tuesday leaders are meeting with key stakeholders to inform them of the decisions.

The command says it will try to mitigate the effects of the changes as much as possible.

Odierno said Tuesday the Army will eliminate at least 12 combat brigades and cancel $400 million in construction projects.

The cuts are part of a longtime plan to shrink the Army's size by 80,000 soldiers.
