Hawaii selected to receive early learning help

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Hawaii is one of six states chosen by the National Governors Association to receive help with early childhood education.

The state said Tuesday Hawaii will receive guidance and technical help from the association, as well as from private sector consultants. The association says it will work with the selected states to improve policies and practices related to educator effectiveness and the use of appropriate assessment systems. The other states are Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

High quality preschool for every child has been one of Gov. Neil Abercrombie's priorities. The Legislature approved Abercrombie's proposal for a new school readiness program to help late-born 4-year-olds from low-income families.

But lawmakers decided to set aside less than half of the funding Abercrombie requested.
