Funding for Hawaii preschool still uncertain

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie's plan for state-funded preschool is still in limbo despite a rapidly approaching deadline.

A committee of House and Senate negotiators met Tuesday to consider two bills creating the early childhood program, but postponed voting until Thursday. Lawmakers must approve the final versions of all bills by Friday.

House Finance Committee Chairwoman Sylvia Luke said Monday that the state budget bill may not include money for the proposal. But she said the measures creating the program could include the necessary funding.

The appropriations would still need to get approval from the House and Senate money committees and be factored into the state financial plan.

Abercrombie has asked for about $32 million for the program. He has said it's his top priority this session.
