52-year-old Maui man dies after falling into pond

By Associated Press

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii (AP) Officials say a 52-year-old Maui man has died after falling into a pond at Haleakala National Park.

Maui County fire department spokesman Lee Mainaga says the man slipped and fell about 12 feet into a pond at Seven Sacred Pools in Kipahulu on Sunday morning.

Mainaga says rescuers arrived and used snorkel gear to find the victim under about 30 feet of water about an hour after he fell in.

The man was brought to the surface with no pulse or breath and had head trauma. He was declared dead at the scene.

The victim's name has not been released.
