US judge to rule next week on Bishop detention

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) A federal judge plans to rule next week on a pretrial release request from a former defense contractor accused of giving military secrets to his Chinese girlfriend.

U.S. District Court Judge Leslie Kobayashi says she'll issue a written decision next week on whether Benjamin Bishop should remain in custody while awaiting trial.

Kobayashi said Thursday she's exploring whether Bishop could be released on conditions that would address the risk he could flee and the danger he might divulge classified information.

Defense attorney Birney Bervar says assigning Bishop to a Honolulu halfway house would take care of these issues. But Assistant U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson says Bishop would likely obtain a cellphone and Internet access at the facility, creating a risk he would leak defense secrets while there.
