HONOLULU (AP) — Officials say a 32-year-old inmate at an Oahu jail has been arrested on suspicion of killing his 76-year-old cellmate.
Hawaii public safety spokeswoman Toni Schwartz says Joseph Tui Jr. is under arrest after the killing at Oahu Community Correctional Center.
She says it's not clear whether a fight broke out or Tui simply assaulted the cellmate, whose name has not been released.
Schwartz says guards heard a commotion Saturday and found the 76-year-old with head wounds. He died about two hours later at a hospital.
Tui was treated for minor injuries and arrested.
The men were in a holding cell for jail misconduct, Tui for threatening staff, the victim for having cigarettes.
Tui was serving a short sentence for misdemeanor assault. The victim was awaiting trial for second-degree robbery.
