Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park reduces services

Hawai`i's national parks are slashing services to avoid employee furloughs due to automatic federal spending reductions, which require officials to trim 5% from the National Park Service budget. On Hawai`i Island 8 staff positions at Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park remain vacant. Park Superintendent Cindy Orlando says education programs and teacher workshops are being canceled and 10 miles of trail will not be maintained, which could result in their closure.
