Police chief gives "snapshot" of Big Island crime

By Associated Press

HILO, Hawaii (AP) Police Chief Harry Kubojiri has provided the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce with a "snapshot" of crime on the Big Island.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald says Kubojiri's told the Chamber this week that homicides doubled over a five-year period from three in 2008 to six last year, and there have been six killings so far this year.

He says last year's 26 armed robberies were the most in five years, 82 percent higher than average. But, he says, the cases involve some relatively minor crimes where force was used, such as purse snatchings.

The chief says assaults declined steadily from 2008 but climbed last year. He says sexual assaults also had dropped but shot back up to 308 in 2012.
