The University of Hawai`i at Hilo College of Pharmacy has been named the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy in honor of the late U.S. senator following a vote Thursday by the UH Board of Regents.
Inouye secured funding of just under $1 million in 2000
to begin the quest for a College of Pharmacy, which was part of his vision to bring about better health care throughout the neighbor islands and Pacific region. College of Pharmacy Dean John Pezzuto said its an honor for the college to bear his name.
“The Senator of course, has been very instrumental in our history and creation of the college,” Pezzuto said.
“And for us to have the honor of naming the college after the
Senator will establish our place in history, will create a legacy, and will create a future for all students to remember his important role in our development.”
Inouye, who passed away December 17, 2012, was Hawai`i’s senior U.S. senator and third in the presidential line of succession after the Vice President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The Regents also approved naming three other University of Hawai`i programs or facilities at UH Manoa, UH Maui College and Kauai Community College in honor of Inouye.
