Island remains under Flood Watch

The Island of Hawai`i remains under a Flash Flood Watch through this evening. County Civil Defense Chief Darrel Oliviera says conditions are ripe for flooding to occur. “Heavy showers and the possibility of thunder storms increase the chances of flooding conditions across both the windward and leeward sections of the island. Motorists are advised to exercise caution as road conditions and visibility may be affected.” In the 24-hour period ending at 2:00 a.m., Mountain View saw 5.2 inches of rain; more than 4.6 inches fell on Waiakea Uka; and 4.1 inches was recorded at the Hilo Airport. A winter storm warning is in effect for higher elevations on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, where up to a foot of snow could fall by tonight and a wind advisory was issued for the north part of the island, where gusty winds of more than 40 mph are expected through 6:00 p.m.
