Regents to look at UH exec sabbaticals

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — The University of Hawai`i Board of Regents will take a look at executive sabbaticals at the University during today’s meeting at UH Hilo.

The board will look at a proposal that would require UH executives who take sabbaticals to make clear how the paid time away will benefit the institution. The new policy would also address executive pay during and after the sabbatical and require people who receive are granted leave to return to the University for at least the same amount of time they spent away.

Regents are looking at the changes in response to public criticism of large salaries some UH executives have received while on sabbatical.

The Regents and University President M.R.C. Greenwood will also discuss allegations from the head of an engineering firm that an Associate Vice President has wasted state money by mismanaging construction projects and steering contracts to firms operated by friends.
