Hawai`i senators vote to repeal public land agency

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) The State Senate has voted to get rid of the heavily criticized Public Land Development Corporation. The chamber approved the proposal unanimously Tuesday. County leaders and community members have denounced the state's land agency for its broad powers to develop public lands without regard to local zoning or permitting laws.

The House last week unanimously voted to approve a separate bill repealing the agency. Unlike the House bill passed last week, the Senate bill keeps some of the agency's personnel by transferring them to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The bill before the Senate originally started as a proposal to curtail urban sprawl. The bill morphed into a repeal of the public land agency after being heard by Senate
