Hawai`i lawmakers push school land development

HONOLULU (AP) — Representatives from three State House committees have advanced a plan to allow Hawai`i to raise revenue by developing public school lands. The committees last week approved a bill to allow up to five schools to develop extra land through private-public partnerships.
The vote was contentious, with some lawmakers saying the proposal is too reminiscent of the state's highly criticized public land agency. The full House voted to repeal the land agency Thursday, bowing to vocal opponents of the organization who say the agency has too much power over state lands.
Representative Cindy Evans says amendments added to the school-related proposal ensure that local communities have control over what developments take place. Opponents say those changes don’t go far enough.
The bill next goes to the full House for a vote.
